Marco Manzo’s Works Created Through Artificial Intelligence, New Technologies and Video Art
At MoMA in New York, Marco Manzo Presents His Artistic Research Combining Video Art, Artificial Intelligence and Sculpture
On the occasion of the event dedicated to the Atlas of Contemporary Art at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, Marco Manzo presented an original project that brings together sculpture, video art and new technologies. The works on display represent the evolution of his artistic research, where sculptural matter and ornamental tattoo art engage in dialogue with artificial intelligence and the most advanced digital animation techniques.
Through video art, the artwork transcends its physical stillness: the sculpted figure comes to life, unfolding through a sequence of moving images that enhance its symbolic and spiritual power. Digital intervention does not replace sculpture; rather, it expands its language, revealing what the marble seems to conceal beyond its apparent immobility.
The same process of transformation has also been applied to the 66 X-ray plates created by Marco Manzo for the Venice Architecture Biennale. Originally conceived as static images, the X-rays become the protagonists of a dynamic visual narrative. Through artificial intelligence and digital animation techniques, they gradually reveal the ornamental patterns impressed upon the body, transforming the radiographic image into a living surface capable of expressing the relationship between anatomy, memory and identity. The skeletal structures appear to breathe, while decorative elements evolve and expand through space, creating an immersive experience that goes beyond the traditional concept of exhibition.
Alongside these works, Marco Manzo also presented a series of digital compositions dedicated to ornamental tattooing, the artistic language that has established him as one of the leading international figures in the field. Traditionally engraved onto the skin, ornamental motifs are liberated from the body and transformed into autonomous visual organisms. They expand, intertwine and continuously evolve within the digital environment, demonstrating how tattoo art can be interpreted as a genuine language of contemporary art.
The entire project reflects on the transformation of the artwork in the age of new technologies. Sculpture, radiography, tattoo art and digital imagery coexist within a single visual narrative, where the transition from material to immaterial does not represent a replacement but rather an extension of the creative process. The original identity of each artwork is preserved while acquiring a new narrative dimension in which time, movement and light become integral elements of the composition.
The presentation at MoMA further confirms Marco Manzo’s ongoing artistic research, successfully combining the tradition of Italian sculpture with the languages of contemporary art. By exploring the creative potential of video art and artificial intelligence, Manzo gives new life to his works and offers viewers an immersive experience in which the boundaries between the physical and the digital gradually dissolve.
